“Our joint winning pictures offer vivid depictions of the civilian toll of the October 7 attacks and the war that followed. In Dan Kitwood’s picture, a woman breaks down as she visits her family’s burnt-out home in Kibbutz Nir Oz, Israel, where her mother and niece were killed, while her children and their father were kidnapped. In the other image, by Ahmad Hasaballah, a family in Khan Yunis, Gaza Strip, warms themselves by a fire outside their home that had been destroyed days earlier by air strikes. Photojournalism alone cannot resolve complex and deeply rooted conflicts, but these pictures show its power to humanize victims on all sides and confront us with the consequences of war.”
